Lorraine Sumner
ZPG Society member Lorraine Sumner of Lake Elsinore, California first realized the impacts of rapid population growth in 1985, when she was in her twenties. As global population approached 5 billion, she asked herself: “How can the world sustain this?” It was this question that propelled her to get more involved in the population movement and ultimately prompted her to include Population Connection in her will. “With everything I see going on,” she shared, “I think it would be a way to impact the world positively. I think it’s important.”
In 2011, Lorraine read an article that would forever affect her. It reported on elephants destroying human developments and causing harm to communities in Africa and Asia. She was appalled by the article’s coverage, believing that the authors had missed the most important cause of the human-elephant conflict. “This was a prime example of population growth negatively impacting wildlife. This was humans encroaching on elephant habitats and subsequently causing harm,” Lorraine noted.
Animal welfare and its relationship to population growth became one of her biggest concerns. From 2011-2014, Lorraine served as the Social Media Manager for Population Institute Canada, where she raised awareness about population issues and the rapid decline of animal species. It was during her time there that she discovered Population Connection through Facebook, and she became a member in 2016.
Lorraine moved from Canada to Southern California in 2014, where she works as a nurse in a progressive care unit. Although it has been difficult to serve on the frontlines during the coronavirus pandemic, Lorraine still finds time to pursue her hobbies and passions. She’s a professional musician and has toured for 17 years. She sings under the name RAINE and plays the bass and acoustic guitar, as well as the piano. She’s proud of raising awareness about environmental issues and social causes, writing songs called “Rise Up” and “Where Has All The Love Gone.” When she’s not working or performing, she spends time with her rescue Chihuahua.
Lorraine said, “I appreciate the work you do and hope you continue to educate the next generation to become environmental stewards.”
