Capitol Hill Days 2019—FAQ’s

Q: Where and when is the event?

The event will take place March 29th – April 1st, 2019 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C. The address is 901 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20001.

Q: How do I register for the event? 

You can register online here. General registration is open until March 1st.  Please contact Lauren Salmiery at lsalmiery@popconnect.org if you would like to book a room within our hotel block.

Q: Are meals provided?

Our program will provide light hors d’oeuvres on Friday evening, breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and breakfast Sunday. Participants are responsible for all other meals.

Q: I’ve never done an in person meeting with my senator or congressperson before. Do I need to have prior experience?

Not at all!  Most folks who join us for Capitol Hill Days have never lobbied their elected officials. We will provide you an in-depth training on how your lobby meeting will go, and will give you the tools to meet with your senators and representatives back at home.

Q: Who will I meet with during my meeting? Will I go alone?

You will meet with the staff of your representatives and senators. On occasion, the representative or senator will attend the meeting. Although it’s rare to attend a meeting solo, it’s possible you may be the only person from your congressional district or state. If this happens, you may attend a meeting on your own. Don’t worry – you’ll be prepped!

Q: Is there a dress code for CHD?

We encourage CHD participants to dress in whatever way they feel most comfortable during the conference. Participants should, however, plan to wear business or business casual attire on Monday, April 1st, when meeting with their senators and representatives. This can include slacks, skirts, button downs, etc. No need to pack a tuxedo!

Q: I’m a student and need financial assistance. Does Population Connection offer scholarships?

Yes! University-level students are eligible for a travel and lodging scholarship, which will cover the cost of your round-trip airfare or ground transportation, and three nights at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C. All scholarship recipients share a hotel room with one other person. We do our best to honor all roommate requests. If you do not request a roommate, we will randomly pair you with another applicant.

Q: How do I know if I’m eligible to apply for a travel and lodging scholarship?

If you are currently enrolled in a college or university, you are eligible to apply.

Q: What makes a strong application?

If you have experience advocating for reproductive rights, we want to know! If you’re involved in the progressive movement, explain your involvement. If you have no experience with reproductive rights or lobbying, tell us what you hope to gain at CHD 2019.

Q: When is the deadline for scholarship applications?

The travel and lodging scholarship application deadline is Friday, February 15th. All travel arrangements for scholarship recipients must be finalized by Thursday, February 28th.

Q: When will I find out if I’ve been granted a travel and lodging scholarship?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. We try to respond to all applicants within 1-2 weeks of receipt.
