Unsafe Abortion Causes 13% of Maternal Deaths Worldwide

In Sneha Barot’s informative article, Abortion Restrictions in U.S. Foreign Aid: The History and Harms of the Helms Amendment, she highlights an arresting statistic about the consequences of limited access to reproductive healthcare: 13% of maternal deaths worldwide are caused by unsafe abortions, which amounts to about 47,000 deaths each year. These statistics are just one reason why it is important to know more about the Helms amendment, which prevents the U.S. from funding safe abortion overseas. Women who don’t want to be pregnant will find a way to terminate their pregnancies, often through life-threatening means. Safe abortion must be part of any comprehensive reproductive healthcare plan.
